Speaking candidly on The Bridge Show, Davido emphasized the pivotal role played by these icons in paving the way for the current generation.
Reflecting on his own journey, Davido recounted the challenges faced upon signing with an international label in 2016.
The artist was born in Atlanta, United States, and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. He made his music debut as a member of the group KB International.
He studied business administration at Oakwood University before dropping out to make beats and record vocal references.
He rose to fame after releasing “Dami Duro”, the second single from his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo (2012), from which six additional singles—”Back When”, “Ekuro”, “Overseas”, “All of You”, “Gbon Gbon” and “Feel Alright”—were taken.
In 2012, Davido won the Next Rated award at The Headies. Between 2013 and 2015, he released the hit singles “Gobe”, “One of a Kind”, “Skelewu”, “Aye”, “Tchelete (Goodlife)”, “Naughty”, “Owo Ni Koko”, “The Sound” and “The Money”.
Despite his superstar status in Africa, the label initially overlooked his accomplishments, prompting Davido to assert his position.
He refused to “start all over again,” highlighting the disconnect between international recognition and African acclaim.
Davido underscored the significance of sacrifices made by predecessors, noting, “What D’banj, P-Square, and 2Face sacrificed for us is what we are enjoying now.”
He emphasized the generational impact, asserting that the current sacrifices would yield even greater benefits for future artists, With unwavering optimism, Davido predicts a brighter future for Nigerian music on the global stage.
