Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a significant move towards upholding human rights and promoting ethical policing practices, the Nigeria Police Force has announced its decision to cease the use of torture tactics during the interrogation of suspects.

This revelation was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday.
Adejobi’s statement comes in the wake of the report on the arrest of several suspected killers of a Divisional Police Officer in Rivers State. Highlighting the force’s commitment to adhering to legal provisions, the spokesperson stated that the police are now conducting interviews in a professional manner, cognizant of the Anti-Torture Act of 2017.
“We don’t torture in the police again. That era has gone. We are actually carrying out what we call interview and interrogation sessions in a professional way to get them,” Adejobi affirmed.
He further emphasized that the police do not resort to torture to extract essential information from suspects, acknowledging that while it may take time to obtain the desired information, they will eventually acquire it through lawful means.
“We are conscious of the provisions of the Anti-Torture Act of 2017. We don’t need to torture anybody. It may take us time to get information from them, but we will surely get information from them,” Adejobi added.
In a related development, the Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong caution against the practice of jungle justice in the country. In a statement released on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police force condemned the extrajudicial punishment of individuals without due process.
