Nigerian Polytechnic Shuts Down, Evacuates Students Amid Heightened Insecurity Crisis

The management of the Gateway (ICT) Polytechnic, Saapade in Ogun State has shut the institution and asked the students to vacate the campus over worsening insecurity around the polytechnic, EKO HOT BLOG has gathered.

The institution, on Wednesday, suspended the ongoing examination until the security situation improves, noting that the polytechnic cannot guarantee the safety of the students.

It was learnt that the students of the polytechnic have been battling robbery and rape cases around the institution residences in the last few weeks.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had on Tuesday threatened a showdown with the state government over the kidnapping and armed robbery of students in some institutions in Ogun State.

While speaking on the various attacks, the State Chairman of the association, Kehinde Simeon, said the students of the polytechnic now live under the fears of kidnapping and armed robbery.

Simeon asked the state government to address the challenges within seven days or risk mass action against the government.

The Acting Registrar of the Polytechnic, J O Popoola, while responding to the situation, ordered the students to proceed on a mid-semester break with immediate effect until the security situation improved.

“In line with the decision of the management, all students are to proceed on a mid-semester break with effect from the close of work on Wednesday, 28th of April, 2021.

“This is due to the security challenges around the students’ residences. Please note that the ongoing examination shall continue immediately the security situation improves.

“Meanwhile, all students should vacate their residences and go home. Any student that stays behind does so at his or her own risk.

“This is for your information and strict compliance,” the internal memo dated April 28 read.

It was, however, gathered that two local members of the local vigilante group have been arrested in connection with the security challenges around the institution.

It was learnt that the Police Command Headquarters in Eleweran detained the local security operatives helping to secure the school environment.

The Police spokesman in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, when contacted, said the security situation in the area had not “degenerated to the level of asking the students to go home.”
