EDITOR’S PICKS:

In a statement released on Thursday by the 81 Division Nigerian Army’s Deputy Director of Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, the victim was identified as a soldier who allegedly confronted the suspect, a policeman who was not in proper uniform and was standing too close to a patrol vehicle of Operation MESA, to confirm his identity.

This reportedly led to an argument that escalated into an unfortunate incident.

The soldier was immediately rushed to the Lagos State Polytechnic Hospital in Odogunyan for medical attention, but he was declared dead on arrival.

The army spokesperson stated that the remains of the deceased have been moved to the 174 Battalion Medical Centre in Ikorodu.

The suspect has been arrested and placed in military custody for his safety before being handed over to the Nigeria police for prosecution. However, an angry mob who witnessed the incident took advantage of the situation and attacked the police station in the community.

Troops have since been deployed around the vicinity of all police stations in the Ikorodu area to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Ayeni reassured the public that the situation was under control, and normalcy had returned to the community. He urged citizens to remain calm and not take the law into their hands, as the Nigerian Army and other security agencies are committed to ensuring the safety and security of everyone.
