Eko Hot Blog reports that the Nigerian men’s and women’s table tennis teams are making their mark at the ongoing African Games, cruising through the team events with impressive performances.
In the men’s team event, Matthew Kuit and Amadi Omeh led Nigeria’s charge in Group 2, securing a 3-0 victory over Mauritania’s trio of Ahmed El Hacen, Ahmed Youssef, and Sagna Hamina.
They followed it up with another convincing 3-0 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo duo of Kassa Gedon and Christian Mbongia, securing their place in the quarterfinals.
The women’s team, consisting of Offiong Edem, Esther Oribamise, and Fatimo Bello, also recorded two victories in their group matches. They defeated their Madagascan counterparts Hanitra Raharimanana, Mahenika Andriamanatena, and Ranto Rakotondrazaka, as well as Algeria’s Lucie Mobarek and Lynda Loghraibi, sealing their spot in the semifinals.
Joining the Nigerian women’s team in the semifinals are powerhouses Egypt, South Africa, and Tunisia, who also topped their respective groups. The semifinal opponents for the Nigerian team will be determined by the second-placed teams from the four groups.
The Nigerian contingent’s success in the team events comes on the heels of remarkable individual performances earlier in the Games. Quadri Aruna secured a silver medal in the men’s singles event, narrowly losing 4-3 to Egypt’s Omar Assar in the final on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Offiong Edem added to Nigeria’s medal tally by clinching bronze in the women’s singles event.
With the team events heating up, the Nigerian men’s and women’s teams will look to build on their momentum and continue their quest for more medals at the African Games.
