The author recounts an incident where a woman broke down in tears at a shop after realizing that the new price of garri meant she could not afford to buy enough to feed her three hungry and weeping children at home.
“It wasn’t as if the weeping woman had lost any relative. The tears came because of the reality that with the new price and the money with her, she might have to return home empty-handed to face her hungry and equally weeping children,” the author narrates.
The high cost of living is not sparing any commodity, from noodles to eggs to bread to butter. “No commodity is spared of the skyrocketing prices: from noodles to eggs, from bread to butter. The high cost of living is killing,” the author laments.
Even seeking medical care has become a burden, with the prices of drugs skyrocketing daily. A woman at a pharmacy was left speechless when informed that her bill for three drugs amounted to N17,000.
“N17,000 for these three drugs? How do we cope in this country? These children better don’t get sick again,” she lamented.
The situation has become so dire that even inmates at the Jos Correctional Centre in Plateau State protested plans to reduce their food rations due to the high cost of living.
“The problem has to do with the high cost of goods in the market. The contractor in charge of the food said they are being forced by the price of food items to reduce the size of the plate of food,” confirmed Comptroller Raphael Ibinuhi.

As the economic conditions continue to bite, the author urges the government to take urgent action to provide relief to Nigerians. “Whatever will be done to bring immediate relief to Nigerians should be done, or what is the purpose of a delicious meal that landed on the dining table at a time when the person it is meant for has already died of hunger?”
