The cautionary statement was issued by the Nigeria High Commission in South Africa and emphasized the need for law-abiding conduct before, during, and after the crucial football match.
The advisory, titled ‘Advisory on Safe Conduct for Nigerians in South Africa Before, During and After 2024 AFCON Match Between Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana,’ urged Nigerians to be mindful of their behavior, especially in public spaces, and to refrain from engaging in loud, riotous, or provocative celebrations should the Super Eagles emerge victorious.
The statement highlighted potential inflammatory online comments from some South African citizens, expressing threats against Nigerians, particularly referencing jollof rice and insinuating actions if the Bafana Bafana lose to the Super Eagles.
The High Commission underscored the importance of vigilance, urging Nigerians to report any provocations to the relevant authorities.
Furthermore, the advisory emphasized the need for Nigerians to uphold good behavior, maintain their reputation for law-abiding conduct, and report any incidents rather than reciprocating provocations.
As Nigeria secured a spot in the AFCON semi-final after defeating Angola 1-0, the caution comes ahead of the anticipated match against South Africa on Wednesday, February 7, 2024.
