The Catholic Diocese of Auchi has announced the death of Rt. Rev. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 104 in Auchi, located in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.
A brief statement from the Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Gabriel Dunia, confirmed that Monsignor Oleghe was the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria at the time of his death. The church has scheduled a funeral service for him on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
The statement read, “With gratitude to God for a life well lived, I inform you of the passing of Rt. Rev. Monsignor Thomas Oleghe, the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria, who passed away at about 2:30 AM on November 24, 2024.
He was 104 years old and a member of the Diocese of Auchi. May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.”

“Though we mourn his passing,” Oshiomhole added, “we find comfort in knowing that his impactful life was pleasing to God, who blessed him with long life before calling him to eternal rest.”
Oshiomhole also prayed for divine strength for the Catholic community in Auchi and beyond, encouraging them to take solace in Monsignor Oleghe’s exemplary legacy of service and faith.
