The Nigerian Institute of Journalism, NIJ, Ogba, has urged its students to shun anti-social behavior likely to affect their sojourn in the school.

The Provost of the institution, Mr Gbemiga Ogunleye gave the advice at the 17th matriculation ceremony which took place in the institution’s hall December 18, 2019.

He reminded the matriculating students of the rigorous process they passed through before they were offered admission, advising them to work hard to justify it.

“We frown seriously at anti-social behaviours, such as cultism, examination malpractices, bullying, sexual harassment, ungodly dresses and other negative vices,” he said.

Ogunleye noted that the students made the right choice by choosing NIJ to study Mass Communication given that it had been duly licensed by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

According to him, the students should take advantage of the fully equipped establishment in their quest to obtain qualitative Mass Communication education.

Ogunleye, also used the opportunity to appeal to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to treat NIJ as a private school with a difference. A perspective of the National Diploma 1 students during the matriculation.

He said, ” NIJ is owned by professional organisations in the media and communication industry. Our proprietors are: The Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria; The Nigerian Guild of Editors; The Nigeria Union of Journalists; The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria.”

The Deputy Provost of the institution, Dr. Jide Johnson, said participation in the matriculation was proof that a student had been successful in the admission process as many were called but few were chosen.

He noted that those that were chosen were the ones matriculated. “In five years time, I see the matriculating students as the movers and shakers of the media industry. They are going to bring a positive change into the system.

The vision of NIJ is to build the students journalistically upright in order to make positive impact in the society,” he said.

The matriculating students are 342 in total. There are 148 in the National Diploma; 83 in the Higher National Diploma and 111 in the Postgraduate Diploma.
