The Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Professor John Obafunwa, has outlined the institute’s achievements and ongoing activities in advancing public health research and capacity building.
Speaking during a media parley held at the NIMR boardroom, Prof. Obafunwa emphasized the institute’s commitment to addressing pressing health challenges through innovative research and strategic collaborations.

He noted that NIMR’s mission extends beyond research to include the development of human capacity by providing training programs designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary to tackle public health issues.
“Our goal is to empower the next generation of health professionals with the expertise required to improve health outcomes in Nigeria and beyond,” he said.

The DG also highlighted the institute’s collaborative efforts with local and international organizations, as well as corporate partners, aimed at maximizing the impact of its research and fostering innovation in the medical field.
Prof. Obafunwa provided insights into the various departments driving NIMR’s operations.
These include administrative units, security and maintenance teams, and specialized health-related divisions like microbiology.
Researchers in the microbiology department are currently conducting critical studies on the prevalence of tuberculosis, a major health concern in the country.
The findings from this research are expected to contribute significantly to the development of effective prevention and treatment strategies.
In addition to its research endeavours, NIMR is actively engaging with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to strengthen partnerships in combating public health challenges.
One of the institute’s current focus areas is raising awareness about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus with significant public health implications.
Prof. Obafunwa assured Nigerians that NIMR is working diligently to gather more data on HMPV and will provide detailed updates as research progresses.
