The DG also highlighted the institute’s collaborative efforts with local and international organizations, as well as corporate partners, aimed at maximizing the impact of its research and fostering innovation in the medical field.
Prof. Obafunwa provided insights into the various departments driving NIMR’s operations.
These include administrative units, security and maintenance teams, and specialized health-related divisions like microbiology.
Researchers in the microbiology department are currently conducting critical studies on the prevalence of tuberculosis, a major health concern in the country.
The findings from this research are expected to contribute significantly to the development of effective prevention and treatment strategies.
In addition to its research endeavours, NIMR is actively engaging with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to strengthen partnerships in combating public health challenges.
One of the institute’s current focus areas is raising awareness about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus with significant public health implications.
Prof. Obafunwa assured Nigerians that NIMR is working diligently to gather more data on HMPV and will provide detailed updates as research progresses.
The DG reaffirmed NIMR’s commitment to its role as a leading institution in medical research, emphasizing that its work is essential in safeguarding the health and well-being of Nigerians.
Through its research, training, and collaborations, NIMR continues to make strides in addressing critical health issues and building a healthier future for the nation.
