EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to paralyze the aviation sector in Imo State, following the alleged disruption of May Day celebrations by the state governor, Hope Uzodinma.
In an official letter addressed to the Lagos branch of the Congress, the General Secretary of the Labour movement, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, directed the Lagos State Council to begin immediate mobilization of its affiliate unions in the aviation sector to prevent any flight from leaving Lagos State for Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The NLC had an emergency meeting of the Central Working Committee (CWC) shortly after the May Day celebrations were disrupted. During the meeting, it was resolved that a comprehensive industrial action would be embarked upon against the State Government, beginning from Wednesday, the 3rd day of May 2023.
The action is in response to the violent disruption of the May Day celebrations in Owerri, Imo State, and the Governor’s alleged interference in the affairs of the Congress during the election of NLC in April.
In the official letter, Ugboaja stated that the action would begin on Wednesday by 12 midnight, and all efforts must be put in place to achieve full compliance. The Congress also assured workers of its commitment towards the protection of workers in all parts of the country.
The directive from the NLC has caused concerns among stakeholders in the aviation sector, as the disruption of flights would not only affect the aviation industry but would also have adverse effects on businesses that rely on air transport.
The aviation sector contributes significantly to the economy of the state, and any disruption to its operations could have severe consequences for the state’s economy.
It is not clear what the state government’s response would be to the NLC’s directive, but stakeholders are calling on both parties to come to the negotiating table to find a peaceful resolution to the issue.
The disruption of flights would not only be detrimental to the economy of the state but would also cause untold hardship to passengers who have already booked their flights.
