The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the justifications offered by some state chapters for not joining the planned nationwide strike, emphasising that workers’ welfare must take precedence.

Speaking to Punch, NLC National Treasurer Akeem Ambali confirmed that the union had instructed all affiliate unions to prepare their members for industrial action in states that have yet to implement the N70,000 minimum wage.

Ambali criticized states that made verbal commitments without formal agreements or concrete implementation plans. “Labour will go on strike by midnight on November 30. We’ve mobilized for this, and all affiliates have been directed to prepare their members,” he stated.

He added that mere announcements without formal negotiations or cash backing are unacceptable under labor laws. “Those promising to start payments in January 2025 or offering empty assurances will face the full force of labour. We won’t tolerate such delays.”

Ambali reiterated that the decision is final, with all union organs in agreement. “There’s no going back,” he declared.

Echoing this stance, NLC’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Benson Upah, emphasized that only full compliance with the new wage structure would prevent the strike, dismissing partial measures or persuasion efforts.
