Eko Hot Blog reports that in a major development, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was finally examined by an independent medical doctor of his choice on Thursday, breaking the long-standing impasse over his health concerns.
This breakthrough comes after months of legal wrangling between Kanu’s legal team and the Department of State Service (DSS), where he is currently detained.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, took to social media to announce the landmark event, expressing relief and determination to persist in their efforts.
“The jinx is finally broken. Today, a very competent doctor, personally chosen by Onyendu #MNK, met & examined him,” Ejimakor wrote. “It wasn’t easy, counting from last year when this should’ve happened. The indomitable #MnkLegalTeam also met with MNK today. It’s tough, but we must not relent.”
The IPOB leader had previously raised concerns about his health during a court appearance, claiming to be suffering from congestive cancer and accusing the DSS of not taking his condition seriously.
Ejimakor had repeatedly accused the DSS operatives of denying Kanu access to an independent medical practitioner, heightening tensions surrounding the case.
Kanu’s family has also voiced grave concerns about his declining health, emphasizing the need for immediate medical intervention to prevent a severe health emergency. “He should not be allowed to die in DSS custody,” Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the family spokesperson, warned journalists on Saturday.
He further revealed that the Federal Government had spent a staggering N800 million for each of Nnamdi Kanu’s court appearances, underscoring the high-stakes nature of the case.
