Nnamdi Kanu: Freedom Appears In The Horizon As Pressure On FG Pushes IPOB Leader Towards Release

Mounting pressure on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to release IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, with hints of imminent release and lobbying from South-East leaders.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is reportedly facing mounting pressure to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to an online media platform, Kanu has been in federal government custody since June 2021 following his extradition from Kenya.

Government sources have hinted at a potential imminent release for Kanu. However, the specific terms of his release remain undisclosed.

When contacted, the presidency declined to officially comment on the situation last night. Nevertheless, sources within the presidency informed Daily Trust that leaders from the South East geopolitical zone have been advocating for the president’s intervention in the matter.

Political leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone have escalated their lobbying efforts to secure Kanu’s release in recent weeks. This effort includes numerous meetings and public appeals directed at the government.

The pressure from these leaders, spanning across political party lines, has brought together legislators and governors from the region in pursuit of a political resolution to the deadlock. The situation has exacerbated economic and social crises in the zone, resulting in significant loss of life since IPOB imposed a mandatory sit-at-home order on Mondays, enforced by its paramilitary arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The federal government, represented by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, has declined to disclose its strategy, citing concerns that discussing the matter could be deemed sub judice.

However, Daily Trust gathered that the governors of the five states would soon meet the president to formally present their resolution.
