Soldiers fighting Boko Haram terrorists in the New Marte and Dikwa towns were recently targeted and defeated by the insurgents.
Over a hundred soldiers have fled the city, possibly for their own protection. However, it was announced on Wednesday that the Nigerian Army had declared 101 soldiers wanted for fleeing Boko Haram terrorist attacks in the towns of New Marte and Dikwa near Maiduguri.
Their bank accounts have also been ordered to be frozen as part of the measures taken to secure their return to the military.
A memo was sent to the force headquarters, according to The Vanguard, as the story was also caught by SaharaReporters, and it reads in part: “You are requested to declare the identified officers and soldiers deserters WEF 19 Feb 21,” the document said.
If seen within your Area of Responsibility, you are also requested to cause the Headquarters, NAFC, to freeze their accounts and arrest or carry them under military escort to this headquarters,” the military memo said.

Nnamdi Kanu, the chief of the Indigenous Peoples of Brafia (IPOB) and the supposed founder of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), seems to be dissatisfied with the way the Nigerian army has treated the situation.
As a result, he seems to have extended an open invitation to the “deserted troops” to “go and join” the ESN instead.
He argued that why would an easterner or westerner join the Nigerian military and be sent to fight banditry in the north so that they “might be killed,” while northerners are sent to areas where there is peace.
