NNPC Foundation Launches Free Cataract Surgery for 1,000 Nigerians

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Foundation has begun screening individuals for its free cataract extraction and surgery initiative in Ikeja, Lagos, targeting 1,000 beneficiaries in the South-West region.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Dr. Bolanle Balogun, a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Screening Coordinator, confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria that the foundation aims to restore sight and improve lives.

The screening will take place at Ikeja, Itire-Ikate, and Gbagada General Hospital over the coming days.

Cataracts, a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision and potential blindness, affect over 65 million people globally. The World Health Organization reports that cataracts contribute to severe vision loss in over 80% of cases.

Balogun explained that the program, sponsored by the NNPC Foundation, will provide free cataract surgeries to 1,000 people in Lagos and Ogun states. Screening in Lagos began at Ikeja Local Government and will continue at Itire-Ikate and Gbagada General Hospital for two days each. Surgeries are scheduled at Gbagada General Hospital from January 15-17.

Following the surgeries, patients will receive follow-up care to monitor their recovery. Many beneficiaries, like 62-year-old Josephine Agbo and 72-year-old Yahaya Abisogun, praised the NNPC Foundation’s efforts, noting they could not have afforded the surgery otherwise.
