North Korea has launched what appears to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile towards its eastern sea, marking the first missile test in two months, according to South Korea’s military.
The missile travelled 1,100 km before landing in the sea, prompting South Korea to strongly condemn the action as a “clear act of provocation.”

The missile launch comes amid US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Seoul, where he is holding talks with key South Korean officials.
During a meeting with acting president Choi Sang-mok earlier on Monday, Blinken highlighted the US-South Korea alliance as a “cornerstone of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.”
South Korea has heightened surveillance to monitor North Korea’s missile activities and is sharing information about the launch with the US and Japan.
This development also coincides with ongoing political turmoil in South Korea, triggered by President Yoon Suk Yeol’s controversial attempt to declare martial law in December.
Yoon has been impeached and faces possible arrest as the constitutional court deliberates his potential removal from office.

The missile launch comes nearly two months after North Korea’s last test in November, when it fired multiple short-range missiles a day before the US presidential election.
At that time, the US had conducted joint military drills with South Korea and Japan, drawing criticism from North Korea’s leadership.
