Northern Coalition Opposes Tax Reform Bill, Plans Protest

A coalition of northern groups under the Forum for Growth and Development of Arewa (FGDA) has condemned the recent tax reform initiative backed by some northern leaders, threatening to stage a protest on Wednesday against what it describes as “Anti-North bills.”

The coalition expressed concerns over the Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Bill transmitted to the Senate by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which aims to streamline tax collection, enhance compliance, and optimize revenue.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the FGDA argues that the bill’s implementation would disproportionately harm the northern region’s economy and commercial activities.

In a statement issued in Kaduna and signed by the group’s convener, Jibrin Mohammed, the FGDA announced its plan to mobilize a protest, stating that the bills are “rejected and unacceptable.”

“We have conducted consultations and investigations into the proposed tax reform bills and found that their implementation will economically disadvantage the northern region,” the statement read.

The group criticized certain northern leaders for endorsing the controversial reform, claiming it disregards the region’s developmental challenges and economic disparities compared to the South.

“The tax reform will disproportionately affect the economic livelihoods and aspirations of our people, especially given the current harsh economic conditions in the country,” the coalition added.

Highlighting the North’s ongoing struggles with extreme poverty, insecurity, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure, the FGDA warned that any policy exacerbating these issues would face strong resistance.

“The North is grappling with severe challenges, and we cannot afford policies that will further impoverish our people. We call on all northern youths and citizens to join the protest to stop these damaging reforms,” the coalition urged.

The protest is set to send a strong message to President Tinubu and the National Assembly, emphasizing the North’s rejection of policies deemed detrimental to its development.
