Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a surprising turn of events, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed regret over the region’s decision to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election.
As quoted in the source, the NEF spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, stated, “The North made a mistake in voting Bola Tinubu to the presidency in 2023, and it is unlikely that they will repeat the same error in the future.”
The forum’s reflection comes as it observes the growing popularity of the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his engagements with northern communities. Suleiman emphasized that the northern electorate would now lean towards a candidate perceived as more inclusive, less controversial, and having a broader national appeal.
Moving forward, the NEF has vowed to be more cautious in selecting a candidate for the presidency, prioritizing unity and consensus-building over past political allegiances. As Suleiman stated, “They will strive to select a candidate who can unite the country and govern in the best interests of all Nigerians.”
This admission of regret by the northern elders highlights the dynamic nature of the political landscape in Nigeria and the evolving expectations of the electorate, particularly in the northern region.
