‘Our Only Hope’ – Northern Politicians Push For Jonathan’s Comeback In 2027

Powerful political figures from northern Nigeria are intensifying efforts to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race.

Their strategy is grounded in the understanding that Jonathan, who served as president from 2011 to 2015, is eligible for one more four-year term under the 1999 Constitution, which allows a maximum of two terms for any individual.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that this campaign is reportedly spearheaded by a governor from the North East and a retired general from the North West, who have united behind Jonathan’s candidacy, believing it aligns with their collective interests.

Their push comes as part of a broader strategy to thwart President Bola Tinubu’s re-election plans.

However, a rival faction of northern politicians is advocating for a different southern candidate, reflecting deep divisions among power brokers regarding leadership. The proponents of Jonathan’s campaign are actively engaging with key stakeholders, seeking to build support for the former Bayelsa governor, who has recently focused on international diplomacy and promoting democratic norms.

Insiders reveal that northern leaders backing Jonathan span the political spectrum and are united in their desire to counter what they perceive as Tinubu’s mismanagement.

The group is also reaching out to like-minded individuals and organizations across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including civil society and pro-democracy groups, to garner wider support.

Northern Politicians Jonathan 2027

Jonathan is viewed as a strong candidate due to his extensive political experience as both vice president and president. Northern leaders believe he could attract support from southern states while maintaining goodwill in the north, even nine years after his presidency.

The momentum for Jonathan’s candidacy surged in August 2023, particularly after Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, a former minister under Jonathan, expressed his willingness to step aside if Jonathan decides to run. He emphasized Jonathan’s experience as crucial for effective leadership.

While the push for Jonathan’s candidacy isn’t new, the strong interest from northern power players in his potential return to the presidency indicates a significant shift in the political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
