An anonymous source disclosed, “Four key figures from Katsina, Kano, and Kaduna are being scrutinized. They were significant in last year’s elections.”
Another source noted evidence of external influence, suggesting collaboration between these politicians and foreign entities to incite unrest using Russian flags.
On Monday, protests against hardship escalated, with demonstrators in Northern states waving Russian flags and calling for President Tinubu’s resignation.
In Kaduna, chants of “Tinubu must go” and support for the military were prominent.
The Nigerian military condemned this as treasonous and announced investigations and potential prosecutions.
General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, stated after a National Security Council meeting, “Flying the Russian flag is treason and will be treated as such.”
The Department of State Services (DSS) arrested tailors making Russian flags in Kano, and several sponsors were also detained.
Protests diminished on Tuesday following security crackdowns.
Kano’s Commissioner of Police, Salman Garba, reported arrests of foreign instigators and announced a curfew adjustment.
Gombe State Police also arrested ten suspects for displaying Russian flags, citing disrespect to national symbols and treasonable offenses.
