Anthony Joshua Fixes Rematch Against Ruiz, See Date
Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn has announced on Tuesday that Joshua’s team has triggered the rematch clause in the contract and that the second fight will take place in November or December, with a venue still to be confirmed.
This coming barely three days after losing his IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight titles to Mexican boxer, Andy Ruiz Jr at the Madison Square Garden.
“After meetings with AJ, Rob Mc [Joshua’s trainer Rob McCracken] and the management team in NY, we have today triggered the contracted rematch clause with Andy Ruiz Jnr. The fight will take place in Nov/Dec at a venue to be confirmed shortly,” Hearn wrote in a tweet yesterday.
The Briton suffered the first defeat of his career, a shocking one at that when he was stopped by Ruiz Jr in the seventh round after going down four times.
Shortly after the fight, his debut match in America, Joshua had said he was not even aware of a rematch clause in the contract. “I didn’t even ask about a rematch clause because I was so confident I was going to win,” he said.
Next is the venue, with Joshua and Hearn voting for UK.
However, Ruiz has said his preference would be Mexico, Los Angeles or New York. “I’m the champion … I call the shots now,” he said on Monday.
