NPFL Match-day Results: Sporting Hold Rangers To Goalless Draw, Sunshine Stars Boost Survival Hopes

Eko Hot Blog reports that League leaders Enugu Rangers were held to a goalless draw by Sporting Lagos in a match-day 34 Nigeria Premier Football League game at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, on Sunday.

The crucial game drew significant attention from fans on Sunday, with Rangers vying for the title and Sporting battling for survival.

It was broadcast live on StarTimes Beta Sports Channel 244.

Despite enjoying a fair share of possession and having more shots on target.

The Flying Antelopes couldn’t break through the hosts’ defense.

Hence, this allowed their challengers, Enyimba, who defeated Rivers United 4-1 on Sunday.

Moreso, Remo Stars, who beat Kano Pillars 2-1 on Saturday, to narrow the gap to two points.

The hosts created a few half chances in the first half, but it was Rangers who had the two best opportunities.

Kazeem Ogunleye forced Sporting keeper Christian Nwoke into a fine save with a left-footed long-range strike and was also denied from another free kick.

However, a tense second half tested the leaders’ resolve.

Although Sporting failed to capitalize in the closing stages despite sustained pressure.

Following the goalless draw, Rangers remain on top of the table with 61 points.

Closely followed by reigning champions Enyimba and Remo Stars, both on 59 points.

Sporting Lagos remain unbeaten at home for the umpteenth time this season.

Yet, their hopes of escaping relegation hang in the balance.

They sit 16th in the table with 42 points, with only a goal difference keeping them ahead of Bayelsa United.

In Aba, Chijioke Mbaoma and second-half substitute Elijah Akanni each scored twice.

As Enyimba dominated with a 4-1 victory over Rivers United, keeping them in contention for their 10th NPFL title.

Mbaoma is now tied with Remo’s Sikiru Alimi, both having 14 goals, in the race for the highest goal scorer award.

In Gombe, Sunshine Stars boosted their survival hopes with a 2-0 win over their hosts

Hence, condemning the Savannah Warriors as the first team to be officially relegated this season.

Promise Awosanmi and Lucky Nwafor scored for the Akure side.

Who are now 14th in the table but only one point above the drop zone.

Bayelsa United continued their push for safety with a tense 3-2 win over Plateau United in Yenagoa.

Meanwhile, Kwara United and Niger Tornadoes remain in the relegation battle after a 1-1 draw in Kaduna.

The final match of day 34, between Akwa United and Heartland, will take place in Uyo on Monday (today).
