Track Obstruction: NRC Suspends Warri-Itakpe Train Service

Nigerian Railway Corporation suspends Warri-Itakpe train service following track obstruction; train derails near Abraka station in Delta State.

the Nigerian Railway Corporation has temporarily suspended the Warri-Itakpe train service due to track conditions between Ujevwu in Delta State and Itakpe in Kogi State.

In a notice to customers, the NRC announced plans to resume operations on Monday, July 8, 2024.

The suspension, effective from Friday, was attributed to an obstruction on the track.

The NRC stated, “This is to inform our valued passengers that the Warri-Itakpe Train service will not be operational today, Friday, 5th July 2024, due to an obstruction on our track. Normal services will resume on Monday, 8th July 2024.

Passengers who have booked tickets online will receive refunds.”

Furthermore, on Thursday around 7:15 pm, one of the coaches on a train traveling from Itakpe to Ujevwu derailed near Abraka rail station in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Reports indicated that passengers experienced a smooth journey until the incident occurred. Frightened passengers reportedly exited through the doors as the train slowed down, causing the derailed coach to pull the remaining coaches off the tracks.

However, no casualties were reported in the incident.

Recall that the Federal Government launched the e-ticketing services for the Lagos-Ibadan and Itakpe-Warri train routes in October of last year.

The service aimed to revolutionise the way passengers book and pay for their train tickets, eliminating the need for physical tickets or cash transactions.
