Operatives from the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested a tanker driver on Saturday for diverting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, intended for the NNPC mega station.

Commandant Sotiyo Igbalawole reported that the driver, Afeez Adegbola, 47, was apprehended on Friday night in Ikirun while attempting to offload the petrol into a reserve tank at a local filling station.

The driver had loaded the product for delivery to the NNPC mega station in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, but only delivered 30,000 of the 40,000 litres, diverting the remaining 10,000 litres to an independent station outside the state capital.

According to Igbalawole, “The tanker driver, Afeez Adegbola, and his crew loaded 40,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit at the Pinnacle Distribution Depot in Eleko, Lagos. The waybill indicated the product was to be delivered to the NNPC, Osogbo Mega station.”

After receiving a tip-off from the public, NSCDC operatives tracked the tanker and discovered that only 30,000 litres were delivered to the NNPC station, while Adegbola was caught discharging the remaining 10,000 litres at TEMPOLA filling station in Ikirun.

The suspects confessed that the entire 40,000 litres were meant for the NNPC Mega Station, but they were instructed by their company to deliver only 30,000 litres, with the rest diverted to a private filling station in Ikirun.

The suspects face charges under Section 1 (a & b) of the Petroleum Production and Distribution (Anti-Sabotage) Act, Cap P12, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN), 2004, which is punishable under Section 2 of the same Act.

The commandant announced that the suspects would be charged in court following a thorough investigation and warned stakeholders in petroleum distribution to avoid acts of sabotage, stating that the NSCDC would not hesitate to arrest anyone caught in such activities.

“NSCDC calls on NNPCL managers and supervisors nationwide to collaborate with us in ensuring that saboteurs are brought to justice,” he added.
