The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved an increase in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, marking a significant boost for corps members.

This announcement was made on Wednesday by the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu.

  1. Initial Allowance (1973): When the NYSC was introduced, corps members received a monthly allowance of ₦120, which was intended to cover basic living expenses during the one-year mandatory service.
  2. Late 1990s and 2000s: The allowance increased to ₦4,000 as inflation and living costs rose.
  3. 2009: The allowance was raised to ₦7,500 under the then-Minister of Youth Development, Bolaji Abdullahi.
  4. 2016: To address economic challenges, the allowance increased to ₦19,800.
  5. 2022: Corps members saw their allowance rise to ₦33,000 to reflect ongoing economic conditions.
  6. 2024: The most recent increase to ₦77,000 was approved on September 25, 2024, aiming to further support corps members in the face of inflation.

This increase underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing the financial support for young graduates participating in national service.
