Obasanjo Almost Put An End To My Military Career 21 Years Ago – Buratai

  • Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), the immediate past Chief of Army Staff says the former President Olusegun Obasanjo nearly retired him at the rank of Major, 21 years ago.

The immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo almost retired him 21 years ago.

Buratai, who revealed this during his official handover to his successor, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru at the Army Headquarters on Thursday, January 28, 2021, did not explain the reason why the ex-president wanted to retire him.

Buratai said Obasanjo almost retired him at the rank of a Major.

Describing his attainment of the rank of Lieutenant General and Chief of Army Staff as historic, Buratai said;

“Former President Olusegun Obasanjo almost retired me 21 years ago when I was a Major. My retirement after 40 years of service is historic, hence, calls for gratitude”.

Buratai commended troops serving home and abroad, stressing that the Nigerian Army will never remain the same.

Buratai alongside his colleagues as Service Chiefs had resigned.

Following their action, President Muhammadu Buhari immediately appointed replacements of the outgoing Service Chiefs.

This includes;

  1. Major-General LEO Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff
  2. Major-General I. Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff
  3. Rear Admiral AZ Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff
  4. Air Vice-Marshal IO Amao, Chief of Air Staff.
