Eko Hot Blog reports that in a poignant message, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo has called upon the country’s leaders to embrace a selfless mindset and consider their positions as an opportunity to serve the people.
Obasanjo, who was on a courtesy visit to Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Government House in Benin City, emphasized the need for sustainable development and long-term thinking.
“The situation in Nigeria is hard, unfortunately so, but there is no bad situation that can’t be good but the question is when and how?” Obasanjo lamented while addressing the current economic realities. He warned those in authority against short-sighted actions, urging them to make sacrifices and think beyond their immediate needs.
“All we should be saying to those who have the opportunity now (because it’s an opportunity for you to run the affairs of your country and look after your people) is: ‘it should not be me but we, not mine but ours, not my tomorrow but our tomorrow, not my generation but all generations including the generation coming. This is what sustainable development is all about. You don’t eat today and not remember the generation coming that they took have to eat, that is all it is,” Obasanjo firmly stated.
While acknowledging the unfortunate circumstances plaguing the nation, the former president expressed hope that positive change is possible with the right approach and mindset.
His visit to Benin City was not solely political, as he revealed that he was in town to pay dowry as part of traditional marriage rites for his kid cousin marrying a Benin girl. As a matter of courtesy, he visited Governor Obaseki, who is the Chief Security Officer of Edo State.
Obasanjo’s message resonates with the need for Nigerian leaders to prioritize the collective well-being of the nation and its future generations, rather than pursuing short-term gains. His call for sustainable development and selfless service serves as a reminder that true leadership extends beyond personal interests and requires a commitment to the greater good.
