Ayo Fayose has revealed what one of the past president of Nigeria told him about Chief Olabode George, a former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during their political tussle.
Former Governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose, announced on Sunday that former President Olusegun Obasanjo orchestrated the imprisonment of Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over a tussle for the party’s national chairmanship.
In an interview with a media outlet, Chief George accused former Lagos state governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, who served as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Tinubu’s administration, of being the men behind his incarceration during the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) crisis.
While being sentenced to two years in jail, without the option of a fine, by an Ikeja High Court on October 27, 2009, he appealed the judgment after serving his sentence, and the Supreme Court quashed the conviction in 2013, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
In an interview, Fayose claimed that George is incorrect in accusing him of sabotaging his attempts to become the PDP’s national chairman, arguing that events have shown that he is not God’s chosen candidate for the post.
According to him, he was in Ota as Ekiti governor when Obasanjo, who decided to become the chairman of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT), said he would create trouble for Bode George so that he would not have time to run for the party’s national chairmanship.
His words;
“Let me state that Chief Bode George is our leader; I will not contest him,” he said. I genuinely do not wish to engage in war with him. His grouse is that I was the one who refused him the opportunity to become PDP national chairman. I’d like to tell him that if God had intended for him to be the national chairman, he would have been. Fayose isn’t God, and he can’t hinder anyone.”
“He keeps saying I stopped him, and I keep telling him that he didn’t help me when I ran for governor in 2014.” He sabotaged my efforts. He conspired against me with people like Jumoke Akindele. At one point, he collaborated with Dayo Adeyeye. But, let’s face it, politics is a game of interests. So, I don’t want to blame him”.
“He said he gave me N250, 000,” I explained. I don’t recall him doing so, but even if he did, I’ve given money to a lot of people running for office. When I was governor, I did some favors for Chief Bode George.
“Do I go out on the streets and proclaim that I purchased Chief Bode George this and that? That isn’t the same degree of maturity. Any politician who says, “I’ll give this person money,” is a fool. I don’t want to say oga has a weak mind, but I don’t think oga is going to say he gave Fayose N250,000. “How much is N250,000?
“I visited him in jail while he was there. He will remember that I was the one who went to Baba (Olusegun Obasanjo) to inform him that he will be going to jail. I was a governor at the time. I flew from Ota to Lagos to meet him, and he told me that Baba Obasanjo had told him that he would send you to jail, and that an agreement had been made for you to go to prison. He won’t be able to deny it.”
“I was in Obasanjo’s Ota bedroom when he told me, ‘that Bode, he’ll pay dearly for it.’ He will be imprisoned. Let’s see how he goes about being national chairman.’ When I received word from Obasanjo, I dashed to Chief Bode George to tell him that Baba Obasanjo had insisted that Nuhu Ribadu, the then-EFCC chairman, file your paper as soon as possible, stating that “whatever Bode would be dealing with, he will not have time for national chairman.”
“That crisis occurred in the Transcorp Hilton, where Obasanjo and Anenih had disagreements. It was because Obasanjo aspires to be Chairman of the Board of Trustees, while Bode George aspires to be National Chairman.”
