Eko Hot Blog reports that, taking a significant stride toward judicial reforms, Governor Godwin Obaseki swears in five new judges for the Edo State High Court on Friday.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at Government House in Benin City, marks a pivotal moment in Obaseki’s efforts to strengthen the state’s judicial system.

During the ceremony, Obaseki urges the newly appointed judges to uphold the principles of fairness and impartiality in adjudicating cases brought before them.

“It is with delight that today I am swearing in five additional judges to the bench of the Edo State High Court,” he states.

Moreover, the governor emphasizes the state’s commitment to ensuring the judiciary’s independence, highlighting the enactment of a law providing for its autonomy.

“We are one of the few states in Nigeria today that have signed the bill of the autonomy of the judiciary into law,” Obaseki affirms.

However, Obaseki acknowledges the concerns raised regarding the selection of judges, stressing the importance of critically re-examining petitions or complaints received.

“When we get complaints or petitions that some of our choices will not go well to strengthen the judiciary, I believe it is important to take a step back and re-examine the petitions critically,” he says.

The governor further reveals that the state is currently awaiting the National Judicial Commission’s (NJC) decision on other potential judges who have received petitions, pledging to comply with the NJC’s rulings.

Speaking on behalf of the newly sworn-in judges, Osayende Ikwuemosi Awawu affirms their commitment, stating, “We are going to do our jobs and perform our duties to the best of our ability.”
