The ongoing investigation of the suspended acting chairman of economic and financial crimes commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has taken an ugly turn following an alleged cover-up of dirty details of sharp practices in the commission.
EkoHotBlog gathered that some unknown people allegedly broke into the new office of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and destroyed computers containing certain vital and sensitive documents that could help in the investigation.
The destruction of evidence that are believed to be crucial in the investigation of the embattled helmsman of the anti-corruption agency is one of the conscious efforts of Magu’s loyalist to obstruct justice and shield the Magu from eventual prosecution.
This development is sequel to the appearance of some officials of the NFIU before the Justice Ayo Salami led panel, investigating Magu, to answer questions certain grey areas especially, as relating to some accounts suspected to have been used to move money.
During questioning, the NFIU officials told the panel that their modus operandi was against moving around with such documents. The officials however, advised members of the panel to visit their office Friday morning for the documents they were requesting for.
In a bizarre twist of event, before the panel members got to the NFIU office on Friday morning, it was learnt that some unknown people had burgled their office, went straight to the room, where the documents were stored in the computers and destroyed them all.
It is quite imperative to note that the NFIU was the agency that investigated all the allegations of corruption against Magu, in addition to the fact that the agency was only recently splintered from the EFCC.
However, a source at the presidency revealed that the Director-General of NFIU, Mr. Modibbo Hamman-Tukur, met with President Muhammadu Buhari immediately after the destruction of evidence incident and briefed him on what happened, a situation sources believed informed the decision by President Buhari to approve Magu’s suspension.
Meanwhile, the burgling of the NFIU office is the latest twist to the Magu trial and is already being investigated, sources added.
