Last year’s record-breaking marine heat waves have worsened the situation, with parts of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico experiencing unusually warm conditions.
NOAA had to update its bleaching alert system to categorize the severity of heat stress, with Alert Level 5 indicating approximately 80% of corals on a reef may die.
Daily monitoring shows zones of Bleaching Alert Level 4 and 5 in the central Pacific Ocean and off the Atlantic coast of South America.
The impacts have been widespread, with bleaching occurring in at least 62 countries and territories since February 2023.
Water temperatures in the Atlantic have been particularly extreme, with 99.7% of Atlantic reef areas experiencing bleaching-level heat stress within the past year.
Bleaching doesn’t necessarily kill corals but makes them more susceptible to disease.
NOAA confirmed a global coral bleaching event due to record-high ocean temperatures, exacerbated by climate change and El Niño.
