EKO HOT BLOG reports that Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun State, has stated that his administration will work with the National Assembly and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) officers to stop the importation of adulterated Adire fabrics into the country.

At the June 12 Cultural Center in Abeokuta, Abiodun declared this at the debut of Adire Market, hosted by Ajose Foundation, a pet project of the governor’s wife, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former governor of the state Aremo Olusegun Osoba, spouses of Edo, Oyo, Lagos, a representative of the wife of the governor of Osun state, and other high government officials attended the event.

The governor, who expressed concern about the high volume of adulterated Adire fabrics imported by foreigners, which has resulted in massive losses for local producers, urged the National Assembly and other government officials to make Adire fabrics the official attire for national events in the country.

“Some people merely come from a place that I won’t mention,” the governor says, “to take our designs, go back to their country, mass produce it, and ship it back to us.” We’ll be starting #EndAdireStealing soon.”

He also revealed that the administration has finalized preparations to include Adire in the state’s school curriculum as an authorized uniform for all students in both public and private institutions.

Abiodun further stated that his administration has been promoting locally manufactured Adire fabrics as a means of empowering the people of the state since its establishment.

He went on to say that his administration’s numerous programs had benefited over 20,000 Adire fabric sellers.
