  • The NNPP withdraws its petition against Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun.

  • The petition had been filed by NNPP Chairman, Olaposi Oginmi to cancel the Ogun State election at the tribunal hearing.

  • The NNPP’s decision to withdraw its petition has brought relief to Governor Abiodun and INEC, who would have been embroiled in a legal battle that could have resulted in the nullification of the election..

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Ogun State has withdrawn its petition against Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over allegations that its name and logo were excluded from the ballot papers used during the March 18 gubernatorial election.

The petition was filed by the NNPP Chairman in Ogun, Olaposi Oginni, and marked EPT/OG/GOV/01/2023, seeking the total cancellation of the election. However, the party has now filed a notice of discontinuance of the petition at the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Ogun.

EDITOR’S PICK

Oginni disclosed this development while addressing newsmen in Abeokuta on Sunday, stating that the NNPP will go back to the drawing board ahead of the 2027 elections and hope to get it right. He added that the petition, if allowed to continue, would disrupt the political system in Ogun State and alter the political calendar.

According to the NNPP Chairman, the same ballot papers used in Ogun State were also used in Kano State, where the party’s gubernatorial candidate defeated the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He further stated that the withdrawal of the petition was necessary to avoid any political chaos in the state.

The NNPP’s decision to withdraw its petition has brought relief to Governor Abiodun and INEC, who would have been embroiled in a legal battle that could have resulted in the nullification of the election. With the withdrawal of the petition, Governor Abiodun’s mandate as the governor of Ogun State remains intact, and he can continue to deliver on his campaign promises to the people of the state.
