Tree Planting is an exercise that comes up in Lagos State annually on the 14th of July. It commenced in 2008 during the tenure of Gov. Babatunde Raji Fashola.
This year’s theme is titled “Restore & Recover” being the year after the COVID-19 lockdown and EndSARS protest in Lagos and aims at planting 4000 trees across the state.
Speaking with Eko Hot Blog, The Head of Department, Environmental Services Department, San. Qudirat Pedro emphasized the importance of Tree Planting.
“I urge everyone to be involved in tree planting because of its enormous benefit to mankind and the environment, considering the rapid climatic change we have been experiencing”
She also encouraged individuals to visit the state-designated centres to pick up seedlings to plant a tree per person in their individual homes
The Chairman of the council, Engr Olumuyiwa Oloro, who was represented by his Vice, Hon Bunmi Oluyadi stressed the need for restoration and recovery of our critical green infrastructure through the tree planting exercise.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu ably represented by Hon Bunmi Oluyadi said his administration’s goal is to inspire an urban future where nature is abundant.
“Our goal is to inspire an urban future where nature is abundant, accessible and co-managed by an active and inspired citizenry. Our desire is to provide green space and environmental education in all communities and create urban biodiversity corridors across the city of Lagos.”
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tunji Bello, who was also represented by Ms Makanju Kafayat said that the event has grown to be one of the largest platforms for environmental public outreach
“The Lagos State Tree Planting Day celebration has grown to be one of the largest and veritable platforms for environmental public outreach in the State and is celebrated annually by thousands of people, groups and organisations across various sectors of the state.”
