Newly-appointed Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has acknowledged the role of Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari play in getting her into the position.
The former Nigerian finance minister has received a lot of plaudits as she became the first woman and African to lead the global body as EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
Okonjo-Iweala arrived in the country for the first time since her new role and paid a visit to Buhari in Abuja.
The 66-year-old acknowledged that without the president’s input, she might not have been elected as the head of the WTO.
She also didn’t stop short of thanking Nigerian youths who kept her name in the conservation on social media to give her even further recognition.
“You nominated me, you wrote hundreds of letters, called up hundreds of world leaders. Without your personal and direct intervention, it may not have worked,” Okonjo-Iweala said.
“The people of Nigeria also supported me massively. The youths were wonderful, always encouraging, backing me up on social media.
“Mr President, the world recognises what you have done. Since its establishment, only men have led the WTO. Now, a woman has emerged for the first time, and she’s a Nigerian. We are so honoured.
“WTO will do more to help Nigeria, but we need to add value to our products in order to trade more. We should exploit all the opportunities in front of us.”
Prior to visiting her home country, Okonjo-Iweala held discussions on United States Vice President Kamala Harris on advancing international trade for recovery and equitable economic growth.
