Oleksandr Usyk, born on January 17, 1987, in Simferopol, Ukraine, is a world-renowned boxer currently competing in the heavyweight division. Standing at 191 cm tall, Usyk has made history by becoming the undisputed world champion in both cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, holding titles from the WBO, WBC, IBF, WBA, IBO, and The Ring.
His landmark victories, including defeating Anthony Joshua in 2021 and becoming the absolute world heavyweight champion in 2018, have solidified his place among boxing’s elite.
Usyk was born to Oleksandr and Tetiana Usyk. His father, a military man, and his mother, a physical education teacher, played crucial roles in his upbringing.
Despite his early health challenges, Usyk was encouraged by doctors to engage in sports, leading him to explore various disciplines such as folk dancing, judo, and soccer.
Boxing, however, captivated him the most. At 15, he began formal training under coach Serhiy Lapin, who quickly recognized Usyk’s potential. Usyk graduated from Simferopol Secondary School No. 11 and later earned a degree from the Lviv State University of Physical Culture.
Usyk attended Simferopol Secondary School No. 11, excelling in a broad range of subjects, including languages, science, and physical education, before graduating with honors in 2004.
He then enrolled at the Lviv State University of Physical Culture, specializing in sports theory, anatomy, physiology, psychology, and various team sports. Usyk graduated in 2008 with a master’s degree in physical education and sports.
Usyk’s boxing journey began as an amateur, where he quickly rose to prominence. He became a four-time Ukrainian champion (2005, 2006, 2008, 2011), a European champion (2008), a world champion (2011), and an Olympic gold medalist in 2012.
He also competed for the Ukrainian Atamans in the World Series of Boxing, finishing undefeated in six bouts.
Turning professional in 2013, Usyk signed with K2 Promotions and made his pro debut in November 2013, knocking out Felipe Romero. By 2016, he had secured the WBO world cruiserweight title by defeating Krzysztof Glowacki.
Usyk defended his title multiple times, overcoming top opponents such as Marco Huck, Mairis Briedis, and Murat Gassiev, ultimately becoming the undisputed cruiserweight champion in 2018.
Usyk made the move to heavyweight in 2019, seeking to replicate his success in a higher division. His heavyweight debut was a seventh-round TKO victory over Chazz Witherspoon. In 2020, he defeated Dereck Chisora in a dominant performance, showcasing his skill and speed.
Usyk’s defining moment came in 2021 when he faced British boxing icon Anthony Joshua for the WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight titles. Usyk delivered a tactical masterclass, winning by unanimous decision and making history as the first Ukrainian to claim the heavyweight championship.
A rematch in 2022 saw Usyk confirm his superiority, defeating Joshua by TKO in the 11th round.
In 2023, Usyk signed to fight WBC champion Tyson Fury, aiming to unify the heavyweight division. This highly anticipated bout was originally set for December 2023 but was postponed to May 2024 due to Fury’s injury. He fought and defeated Fury in Decemeber 2024.
