VIDEO: ‘Dredgers Are Killing Our Fish In Oluwo Market’ — Farmers Cry To Lagos Govt For Help

Eko Hot Blog reports that farmers at the Oluwo Fish Market in Epe, Lagos State, have accused dredgers working near the market of endangering and killing their fish.

The Oluwo market is widely known in Lagos for its rich stock of fish.

In a video obtained by Eko Hot Blog on Thursday, a woman who is familiar with with the fish farm revealed how the activities of dredgers resulted in the death of the livestock.

Speaking at the scene of the fish farm where dead fish were visible, the woman called on the Lagos State Government to come to the aid of farmers.

She noted that the fish farmers have been thrown into huge losses and debt, and don’t know where else to turn to.

“Please, come to our aid in Oluwo market. These are all our fish farmers suffering since morning. All their fish inside the cage have died due to the dredging of the water in Oluwo market, Afuye. Please, Lagos State Government, help us. People, help us,” the unidentified woman said.

“See all our farmers inside the water since morning. All their tilapia fish inside the cage have already died. We don’t know where we are going to. The ‘gbese’ e don ‘shele’ o (we are in debt). Please, come to our aid. This is something.

“Help us, these people that are dredging sand here, they parked their dredging truck near the fish cage inside Oluwo market. This is something. Please, help us. We don’t know where we are going to.

“Don’t let we farmers protest. Hunger. Suffer. Sorry o, help us o, government.”

The Oluwo fish market, also known as the Epe fish market, is the biggest fish market in Lagos state.

The market traders are mostly women because of the chain of distribution which allow the fishermen mostly men to catch the fishes and deliver them to the trader who in turn sell them to the retailers.

The market’s role as a major producer and exporter of fish to various parts of Lagos and Nigeria at large earned Epe town the “fish basket of the state” slogan.
