Onaiyekan Harps on the need for restructuring
The Catholic Archishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan has re-echoed the need to restructure the country in order to decentralise power.
He said restructuring would enable governors perform their constitutional responsibilities of being chief security officers of their states.
He argued that the security situation in the country has made it more cogent for government to restructure.
Briefing journalists, yesterday, on the Conference on Irregular Migration billed for Tuesday in Abuja, Onaiyekan said there was too much power at the centre, adding that though Nigeria has 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT), it is only the Federal Government that mattered, when things get to the extreme.
He said: “We have been talking about restructuring. What we have is a government made up of the Federal and states and each state has it own governor. The question is: who is responsible for security in states? If it is the responsibility of the state governor, then he should be allowed to do his work.”
