EKO HOT BLOG reports that Ondo State police on Sunday said that its personnel were not to blame for the d3aths of three residents of Kajola in the state’s Odogbo Local Government Area.
A hit-and-run motorist killed indigenes, including a village chief, who were riding a motorcycle on the Lagos-Ore road Saturday evening, the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) reports
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, claimed the victims’ d3aths were caused by traffic violations rather than police negligence.
The Ondo Police PPRO said the deceased used a motorcycle without a headlamp, adding that they were riding on a one-way route, thus leading to a head-on collision with a speeding vehicle.
“The d3ath of the victims was not caused by the police, as being circulated. They died as a result of flouting traffic rules,” said the police spokesperson.
“The deceased were riding a motorcycle with no headlamp on a one-way route and had a head-on collision with a speeding vehicle. They have died now and are not able to tell the story.
“Youths should find a way of registering their grievances. Lynching police officers or burning down police station at every slightest opportunity is barbaric.
“Police are there to protect them, while there are several emergency numbers through which they can report issues to the police headquarters. They should not take laws into their hands,” Odunlami said.
This online media platform gathered that local teenagers accused Ondo Police of extortion at a checkpoint in the area, which they regarded as illegal.
A witness, Funmi Olowogboye, the accident occurred while police officials were attempting to extort the victims when they were crushed to death by a speeding automobile attempting to flee capture.
The youths stormed on Kajola police station in huge numbers, carrying the bodies of the deceased and attempting to burn it down.
It took the combined efforts of police officers and other security officials to prevent the youngsters from lynching the officers and torching the police station, as well as the restoration of normalcy in the region.
