One Dead in Alleged Crash Involving Benue State Governor’s Convoy

  • Alleged crash involving a vehicle linked to Governor Alia’s convoy reportedly kills one in Ihugh, Benue State.
  • Governor’s aide denies fatality, claiming the accident involved a separate vehicle, not the convoy.
  • Police spokesperson unavailable for comment on the incident.

A tragic incident in Ihugh town, Vandeikya Local Government Area of Benue State, has sparked controversy as one person was reportedly killed in an accident involving a vehicle linked to the convoy of Governor Hyacinth Alia, EKO HOT BLOG reports.

According to local accounts, two separate accidents occurred on Sunday near Ihugh Market during the governor’s visit to his hometown for the Christmas holidays. Residents claim that in the first incident, a vehicle in the governor’s convoy struck and killed a man.

On the return journey to Makurdi, the state capital, another crash reportedly occurred in the same area, leaving several people injured.

However, the governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev, has denied the allegations of a fatality. He clarified that the accidents were unrelated to the governor’s convoy.

“Governor Alia’s convoy did not kill anyone,” Iorpev stated. “The incident involved a single vehicle on a separate mission, not part of the convoy. The accident happened at night due to poor visibility caused by a dusty road, and the vehicle collided with another. It had no connection to the governor’s convoy.”

Iorpev further explained that most vehicles in the governor’s convoy had already proceeded to the church when the incident occurred.

Efforts to obtain confirmation from the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, were unsuccessful as calls to her phone went unanswered.

While details of the incident remain disputed, the situation has drawn attention to road safety and the responsibilities of government convoys during official trips.
