The Peoples Democratic Party PDP has called for immediate investigation into the fuel tanker explosion that rocked Onitsha as the party mourns the victims of the tragedy.
The party described the incident as devastating while expressing shock over the unfortunate inferno.
The party disclosed this in a press statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan on Thursday.
Kola noted that the party was saddened by the occurance of the unfortunate incident which has claimed lives and property of the well meaning Nigerians.
The statement reads “The PDP is shocked by the devastating petrol tanker fire outbreak in Onitsha, Anambra state, describing the incident as heartbreaking and traumatizing.
“The PDP however called for an investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the accident as well as the circumstances that may have frustrated timely intervention in the tragedy.
“This is primarily to ensure that measures are put in place to forestall a reoccurrence, as the safety and wellbeing of all Nigerians remain paramount to our party.”
The party lamented the loss of lives including a mother and a baby who were killed by the inferno.
“The PDP is deeply saddened by the tragic occurrence particularly, the painful death of our compatriots including a mother and child who lost their lives in the inferno that also razed houses, shops and other valuables,” Kola said.
It could be recalled that the inferno happened at Ochanja Market Area of Onitsha in Anambra state on Wednesday and had since, Nigerians have been commensurating with the families of the victims.
The PDP however, prayed that God grants for the families of the victims to fortitude to bear their loss. Calling on well meaning Nigerians to rally round the government in providing support and succour for the victims of the tragic incident.
In the same vein, President Muhammadu Buhari has sent his heart felt condolence to the families of the victims of the inferno.
Buhari described the inferno as sad and regrettable adding that, the death of a mother and her baby was profoundly touching.
He said this via a tweet on Thursday.
Buhari said “The fire incident in Onitsha yesterday is sad and regrettable. I am profoundly touched by the sight of the charred remains of an innocent mother and her child, who are victims of this tragedy.
“I extend my sympathies to all the victims of the explosion, whose houses, shops and other property were destroyed.”
The President however, noted that he was calling for urgent actions to stemming the frequent fatal disasters on public roads. He also called on the Federal Road Safety Commission and other stakeholders to urgently address the menace.
Buhari said “I am calling for urgent action on the part of those concerned to stem these frequent fatal disasters on public roads. Safety precautions and routine maintenance, often taken for granted by vehicle owners, must be enforced.
“I call on the Ministry of Transport, the Federal Road Safety Commission and other stakeholders to urgently address the issue of safety standards in Nigeria, with a view to stemming the frequency of these tragedies. May the souls of the dead rest in peace Amen.”
