EKO HOT BLOG reports that eyewitnesses revealed that the fire originated from one of the shops in the area. Chidimma Ike, a resident of a nearby building, recounted the terrifying incident, stating that the fire erupted unexpectedly.
“We were suddenly confronted with thick smoke, and before we could comprehend the situation, the flames began to spread swiftly,” she said.
Ike noted that many shop owners were absent as they had stayed home for the Christmas holiday, leaving their businesses unprotected. Despite numerous calls to the fire service, residents and passersby were the first responders, working tirelessly for hours to save goods and contain the blaze.
Another affected shop owner, Chinedu Nnamdi, shared his account of the incident. Nnamdi initially dismissed the sight of smoke from a distance, assuming it was someone burning refuse.
“I thought it was a refuse fire until I got a call from my neighbours informing me that our shops were engulfed in flames,” he lamented.
The fire, which lasted several hours, caused significant damage to businesses in the area, leaving traders devastated on a day meant for celebration.
Authorities are yet to determine the cause of the fire, but preliminary reports suggest it may have been accidental.
