Online Learning For Junior Secondary Schools Is Stressful, Parents Complain

Published

on

Parents and guardians of students, especially students in primary and junior secondary schools, have called upon Lagos State Ministry of Education to find an alternative to online learning.

to replace the online learning as they felt they have returned to work as a result of the lockdown relaxation from the state government, adding that the online learning is taught through WhatsApp and the phones used for that belong to the parents.

Another complaint was that even when the stay-at-home order was still in effect, some parents could not afford to buy data for the children to join their colleagues on online learning.

Our reporter, who visited some parts of Lagos Island today, 7 May 2020, interviewed some parents to have their opinion on the new development.

A resident of Elegbata around the apongbon area, Mrs. Kareem Basirat, told our reporter that most parents have been complying with the new development as they bought phones for children and also bought data for the children to be updated as the online programs unfold.

She added, however, that some could not afford this as they are still struggling to live.

“Well, I think the only solution to this is the eradication of coronavirus,” she said, “When coronavirus is gone, students will return to school.”

A trader at Idumota, Mr. Johnson Paul, said parents have started engaging with their daily activities, noting that only children are at home with phones. He moved further to say that if these children were not guided they might be diverted to other functions on the phones by the unavailability of the parents.

“If the teachers handling the online classes can still repeat what they taught online when the schools finally resume, it would be a reasonable idea,” he said.
