EKO HOT BLOG reports on Rear Admiral Chase D. Patrick, the Director of Maritime Headquarters at U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and Sixth Fleet’s statement on the issues facing Africa, explaining its issues can only be resolved through local solutions.
During a press briefing of the Department of State’s Africa Regional Media Hub, Rear Admiral Chase D Patrick discussed Exercise Obangame Express 2023, a regional exercise aimed at addressing the insurgency problems along the coastline of West Africa.
Admiral Patrick emphasized the commitment of U.S. Naval Forces to being a long-term and reliable partner in Atlantic Africa, stating that security on the waters surrounding the continent is critical to maintaining global safety. He acknowledged the dynamic threat posed by violent extremist organizations, which requires creative and collaborative solutions.
The Rear Admiral praised African nations for prioritizing maritime security and commended Obangame Express as an opportunity for the U.S. Naval Forces and African partners to work together on enhancing maritime safety. He stated that the exercises help build trust and relationships by working together, learning from each other, and sharing ideas.
Rear Admiral Patrick oversees all African partnership station exercises in West, North, and East Africa, including Obangame Express, Phoenix, and Cutlass Express. He stated that building good relationships through training and operation is the foundation of any strong partnership.
Rear Admiral Patrick stressed the importance of African solutions for African problems, and the role of U.S. Naval Forces in supporting and enhancing maritime security in the region.
“From boarding procedures to legal jurisdiction and prosecution, we’re working together to become a stronger force.
“We recognize that African problems can only be solved by African solutions, and that is why we’re here, to learn from each other and share ideas to enhance maritime security.” Patrick stressed.
