Only God Can Keep Watch On Nigeria Borders With Niger Republic – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says the supervision of over 1,400 kilometres of border between Nigeria and Niger can only be done by God.

The president said no amount of border patrol officers and security operatives station at these entry points would be enough to check the influx of unwanted and unauthorized persons into the Nigeria.

Ekohotblog reports that the president spoke on Tuesday while receiving former Vice-President Namadi Sambo at the presidential villa in Abuja on Tuesday,

Buhari said he knew a thing or two about the neighbouring West African country because of its closeness to Daura, his hometown in Katsina state.

He described the president of Niger Republic as a responsible and honourable man whose actions were guided by dictates of the country’s constitution.

Sambo chairs the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) election mission to the Republic of Niger.

In a statement, the president said Nigeria would provide the country with the support its needed in its forthcoming presidential elections.

“I come from Daura, few kilometres to the Republic of Niger, so I should know a bit about that country. The president there is quite decent, and we are regularly in touch. He is sticking to the maximum term prescribed by the constitution of his country” Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, quoted him to have said.

The president said ensuring peace reigns in the sahel region would have huge positive impact on Nigeria.

“Also, we share more than 1,400 kilometres of border with that country, which can only be effectively supervised by God. I will speak with the President and offer his country our support. We need to do all we can to help stabilize the Sahel region, which is also in our own interest.”
