EKo Hot Blog reports that The Federal Government has initiated investigations into the activities of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, along with DHL, a logistics firm, and the online payment platform OPay.

These inquiries follow numerous complaints by Nigerians regarding violations of data subjects’ rights.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is currently examining the data processing practices of these entities. If found culpable, they may be required to forfeit two percent of their annual gross revenue to the government.

This is the second time the NDPC has launched investigations into companies, banks, and universities in the country for alleged data breaches.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of NDPC, had previously warned that such infractions would result in penalties in accordance with the law, emphasizing the commission’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s data economy ecosystem.
