EKO HOT BLOG reports that Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement and launch of the AgroPastoral Integration for Peace and Sustainable Development (AIPASD) Project on Tuesday, MACBAN Secretary in Benue, Ibrahim Galma, said the association fully supports the initiative aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence and sustainable practices among herders and farmers.
“We now know quite well that open grazing is not sustainable, not only in Benue State but in Nigeria in general,” Galma said. “The growing population, worsening insecurity, and changing climate conditions have made it difficult to continue the old ways.”
Galma said MACBAN has been involved with the AIPASD project since its pilot phase and reaffirmed its commitment to the programme’s expansion across Guma and Makurdi Local Government Areas. He stressed the need for inclusive implementation, calling for the establishment of local committees comprising traditional rulers and community leaders to help educate pastoralists on peaceful cohabitation.
“We believe this project can bring lasting peace. It is important that local stakeholders, especially the Ardos and traditional rulers, are part of the solution so herders can better understand how to live harmoniously with farming communities,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Benue State Chairman of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Peter China, expressed frustration over the prolonged herders-farmers crisis. He lamented that many farmers in the state had been unable to access their lands for over eight years due to the insecurity.
“The impact has been devastating. Our farmers are afraid to go to their lands, and food production is suffering. We need urgent solutions to restore peace and productivity,” China stated.
