Opinion: Impeachment of Donald Trump: To be or not to be? By Otunba T.J Abass

Wednesday, December 18th 2019 will be another landmark in the politics of the United State of America (USA) as the Congress, the lawmaking body of the world’s bastion of democracy is set to Impeach the President, Donald Trump.

His impeachment is almost certain, barring any last-minute political maneuvers or about-turns.

Donald J Trump is up against a powerful group,  the Democrat-controlled house, and if this happens, he will enter the history books as the third President in the History of the United State to be removed from office.

The House Rules Committee is currently in a closed-door session to set the parameters for a floor debate on the articles of impeachment slated for Wednesday, December 17.

Thereafter, the full House would vote on the articles, setting up the stage for a highly contentious moment as both sides, Republicans and Democrats would match up to each other, in articulating points, and canvassing reasons for their position on the issue.

The Impeachment battle goes to the floor of the Senate where the decision will be made in a trial, to consider if he (Donald J Trump should be removed from office or not.

This obviously would be an uphill task, given  the advantage the Republicans have in the Senate on the one hand, and the 2/3rd majority requirement.

In essence, twenty Senators would defect to meet the threshold of sixty-seven Senators needed to effect the removal of President Trump from office.

It is not an overstatement to say that, there is yet to be an American President that is as cantankerous and self destructive as President Donald Trump.

There is also yet to be another administration in United State of America history that has been plagued with a plethora of controversies and allegations of abuse of power, flagrant disregard to a constitutional provision like the administration of Donald J Trump

The latest one that triggered the impeachment inquiry stemmed from the April telephone call to Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine President-Elect and  his effort to pressure Ukraine to investigate political rival, Joe Biden.

Trump faces one charge of abusing his power by asking Ukraine to investigate Biden, a leading Democratic contender  in the 2020 US presidential election, and one of obstructing Congress’ investigation into the matter.

The President has vehemently denied wrongdoings, claiming  that the April telephone call  to the President of Ukraine was in line or consonance with his statutory responsibility as the President of the United States of America.

The Democrats, however, hold a contrary view. The telephone call was tantamount to gross abuse of power and total disregard of rule of law.
.
The oversight function of the Congress must be sacrosanct and the overall interest of American people protected given that the interest and will of the people is far more important than the personal interest of the President, or any other person for that matter.

A leader worth that appellation is not one that drives roughshod on the people, but aligns with their wills and aspirations in his conduct in office.

It is for these that political observers are waiting, more eager than ever on what will eventually play out in America, in fact, what would be the fate of Trump by the time the dust clears.

Yes, it may be America’s domestic affairs, but given that clout of the country in the global community, it is equally the concern of the world. Whatever eventually happens, either for or against, would have a reverberating effect elsewhere in the world, in small or big measures.

The American people are waiting. The entire global village is watching. Eko Hot Blog will provide the coverage Please stay tuned
